After we recently told you about what your C.L.U.E. report is and how you can check yours for free, we received several questions about how to file a dispute with LexisNexis to challenge the information on your report.
Fortunately, the process is very easy. In this article, we’ll cover what info you’ll need to pull together before filing a LexisNexis dispute and share a template form letter you can use in the process.
How to File a LexisNexis Dispute Over Your C.L.U.E. Report
For those who aren’t entirely certain what a C.L.U.E. report is, it’s a database maintained by LexisNexis that contains claims info on your personal property and vehicles. Typically, the claims info goes back seven years.
So if you filed either a home or auto insurance claim in the last seven years, it’s likely recorded on your C.L.U.E. report. This info is then accessed by insurers anytime you’re shopping around for a new policy and they want to get a sense of who you are as a potential customer.
Of course, sometimes the info on your report can be incorrect through no fault of your own. That’s why it’s helpful to know how to file a LexisNexis dispute over your C.L.U.E. report.

How Does the Dispute Process Work?
There are actually two routes you can take when disputing info in your C.L.U.E. report.
- Explanation
- Dispute
If you submit an explanation of an insurance loss on your record, your explanation will appear on all future reports — but it won’t remove the loss from your record, no matter whether it’s correctly or incorrectly reported.
By contrast, a dispute could allow you have to have wrong info removed from your report.
Filing a dispute involves LexisNexis contacting the insurance company with your side of the story. If the insurance company agrees that the disputed info appears on your report wrongly, LexisNexis will remove it.
But if the insurance company takes issue with your dispute, the loss will remain on your record.

LexisNexis Dispute Template Letter
Before you reach out to LexisNexis, you’ll obviously want to have a clear idea of whether you’re disputing a loss record or just simply want to submit an explanation to accompany that loss record on future versions of your C.L.U.E. report.
If it’s the latter, you’ll want to prepare a statement in 100 words or less that you’d like to be included on future versions of the report.
